Answer: When his lips move.

Now here's a glimpse of what newspaper editors typically edit out of the reporters first draft:

The Reporter's First Draft:
"With Lab public affairs and government relations folks in tow, and the ever slippery Rich Marquez leading the band, the Lab director was able to sing the right tune for the oversight committee to swoon over as he proclaimed that 103 of 104 cleanup milestones have been met. Yes indeed, it was another unremarkable performance by a citizen legislature too uninformed to ask intelligent questions aimed at getting to the truth, and too self serving to care."

Editor's revision:
"The Laboratory director stated 103 of 104 cleanup milestones have been met."

And Here's The Movie Version:

Later, behind the scenes, the Lab Director's chief of staff, Rich Marquez, sits in his penthouse office, staring into space like Al Pacino's character at the end of the second Godfather movie. He contemplates his life, rooted in an inherent ability to orchestrate confusion and disorient through the use of public affairs spin, government relations distortion and legal office denial and harassment campaigns that serve defuse criticism, deflect legitimate public scrutiny and destroy those who dare challenge his domain and that of his corporate masters. As the movie ends, he stands up, adjusts his glasses and walks over to look his window. And has scans his domain, images of his climb to fame and fortune at the expense of truth and the lives of many flash through his graying scalp. It is at this point that a smile slowly crosses his face as he sighs within himself and in a barely audible tone says..."ah yes...life is good."

The camera now scans out the window to capture the image of a smoldering landscape--the remnants of a one great national lab now little more than a corporate bastion of power and control.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28220200.post-9188538143003965682007-08-05T07:06:00.000-06:002007-08-05T07:06:00.000-06:00For the director of LANL to testify to the State l...For the director of LANL to testify to the State legislative oversight committee that 103 out of 104 milestones were met on time is simply perjury. When LANL misses a deadline, it matters not whether the fault was UC or LANS, the deadline was still missed.

The NM state legislature needs to hold Anastasio responsible for his dishonesty. Time for the NM legislature to subpoena LANL's environmental records.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28220200.post-75919534851835644482007-08-04T22:20:00.000-06:002007-08-04T22:20:00.000-06:00"As in the case of a baseball relief pitcher, not ..."As in the case of a baseball relief pitcher, not accountable for scores made by runners already on base, the current LANL managers are charging missed deadlines to the previous managers when they can."

Accountability starts at the top, Mike. How do you expect your employees to feel accountable for their actions if they see you bunting issues at the very top? You can't be an effective leader if you sink to using a double standard. This reminds me of the infamous LANS Board "human error" security incident several months ago. Are we seeing a pattern form?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
