Aramark Inc. in Los Alamos has paid $153,440 in back wages and fringe benefits to 72 current and former food service employees. An investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division found that the employees had not been properly paid. Aramark contracts with the Los Alamos National Laboratory to provide food services.

An investigation covering the two-year period from July 13, 2004 to July 11, 2006 found that the food service company did not pay some employees the prevailing wage for all hours and did not pay other employees fringe benefits to which they were entitled. The company also withheld wages for lunch periods that were not taken, according to a news release from the labor department.

The infractions were in violation of the McNamara-O'Hara Service Contract Act, which covers contracts entered into by federal agencies in which the principal purpose is to furnish services in the U.S. through the use of service employees.

The company has paid the wages in full and agreed to future compliance, the department says.
