Comment of the Week

We have two comments to be featured this week. The first one is from the LANL Manager Avoided $88M Fine post. This one is short, sweet, and to the point:

"Department of Energy apparently forgot to put legal requirements in its contract with the lab operator,"

Bullshit.

Bechtel agreed to help DOE turn LANL into a pit factory. In return, DOE agreed to protect Becthel's pet LLC.

End of story.

The next comment was from the post about Dynes resigning:

"Good riddance, shit head"

This blog editor shares the sentiment. Dynes was no friend of LANL. His deer-in-the-headlights management style (using the "management" term in its loosest sense) was what allowed the Nanos fiasco to turn into the Nanos disaster.

Good riddance, Bob.

  2. UC has 103,000 faculty and staff, and 160,000 students. LANL is only about 5%.

Should Dynes have been a friend of LANL? What does being a friend mean in this context? LANL causes tons of trouble; should Dynes' real duty to UC have been to dump LANL as quick as possible?

  3. UC received $8 million per year from DOE to run LANL. UC hired Nanos. UC did nothing when Nanos went beserk. In fact, UC never did nothing at all for their $8 M fee except to provide a decent self-funded benefits package. That is how LANL got into such a sad condition.

  4. $8M. What a princely sum. What a rip off of the taxpayers. For $8M, UC should be eternally grateful. For $8M, UC should have blown the secretary of energy daily.

Yo, dumb-ass. The real payoff to UC was LBL, not the LANL annual fee.

  5. I fear that there is no one, outside a small New Mexico town, who sides with the employees over Mr. Nanos. There seems to be ample evidence in the public domain that Mr. Nanos did not do enough, before he departed, to bring about a disciplined, secret, nuclear facility.

WTF? Really? WTF? You accept the responsibility to manage something - then manage it. Don't cry, whine, or snivel - all that's become acceptble to do when someone is asked to do their work.

  7. Would you say LANS is managing LANL?

  8. If the lie detector is good enough for a reality TV (below), I guess it's good enough for NNSA scientists. Actually, I'm beginning to feel that LANL must be running a pilot for the upcoming season of "Survivor". Who's going to be the next employee to be kicked off the island (aka RIF'ed)?

    LIE DETECTOR

NEW FOX GAME SHOW EMBARRASSES LIARS - NY Post
    By MICHAEL STARR

August 14, 2007 -- FOX is shooting a game show proving the old adage that it doesn't pay to lie.

    Or does it?

"Nothing But the Truth," a hit in Colombia, uses a lie detector and a series of 21 in creasingly personal questions to judge whether contestants are telling the truth.

If they pass, they win up to $50,000 and can walk away with their winnings at any time.

If they fail, they face the wrath of family and friends sitting in the studio audience.

Call it "Squirm TV" of the most uncomfortable kind.

"The show came from my growing disgust at how dishonest this world is becoming," says Howard Schultz, the L.A.- based producer who created the show (as well as "Next" and "Ex treme Make over").

"In a sense, it's a tremendous play-along for people at home," he says. "You're not only judging the individual on whether they're telling the truth, but you end up asking yourself the same questions."

"Truth" is getting huge ratings in Colombia, the first country to get it onto the air. Questions have included, "Have you ever cheated on your wife?" and "Do you consider yourself a better person than your mother-in-law?"

On the show, each contestant takes a backstage polygraph test, which is used to gauge their "truthiness" while they're interrogated on the air.

Schultz says he originally produced the "Truth" pilot for NBC, then sold the format to England and Australia before striking a deal with Reveille to sell the show worldwide (former Reveille head Ben Silverman now runs NBC entertainment).

"Truth" has also been fast-tracked in Brazil, Germany, Spain, France and many other countries.

"This has become a universal issue," Schultz says. "Spin-doctoring is just a fancy word for lying.

"It's much harder to hold on to lies than to hold on to the truth."

Schultz says he expects Fox will finish shooting "Truth" by the end of October - but he's not at liberty to reveal the host.

"I think I've discovered something of a chord that needs to be struck for all of us," he says.

  9. Too many STFU's, WTF's, shit-head, ass-hole, racist drivel and other assorted comments are starting to fill up this blog. Perhaps it's time to think about turning off anonymous posts. It's what Doug eventually had to do to begin to clean things up.

    you need some help.

  11. Guys, you are missing the big picture here. The UC pension fund is about to blow sky high, due to a huge amount of MBS and CDOs, which was formally rated at AAA, but is now obviously junk. UC and just about every other US pension fund is about to do an Enron. If you can shift into short term treasuries, you may have only days to do so.

  12. You folks are giving the word fanatics a new meaning. Just chill for a moment. Why can't you see that Dynes is finally getting his, just like ... well, Mitchell. You all know UC and LANL, they would sell their first borns and mothers to avoid a law suit going to court. So what, they have settled by letting these folks "go" to find their families. I think there is a "find a family" section somewhere on E-bay and it seems lately like many people associated with LANL are shopping (and I think Nanos went shopping too). It happens. Let's move on to the next story like "wow, how 'bout that LINKs survey today"? Great stuff, eh?

You almost got it. In our case, it's not a case of surviving being kicked OFF the island. It's more like an endurance test to see how long you can stand being ON it. Imagine a game of who can last the longest with jumper cables clipped to their nether regions while the power is slowly increased.

Good Lord, sounds like being a GL in B-Div who is being continuously micro-managed by your AD who can't keep her f*ckin hands out of other people's programs and groups. Don't turn up the voltage anymore, shoot me now!

  15. "The UC pension fund is about to blow sky high.." 1:14 PM

I wouldn't worry about just the pensions. Yes, they are in deep trouble, but the whole US economy is also in serious trouble. The dollar just keeps dropping and the financial news gets more ominous with each passing day. Looks like the famous US Goldilocks economy is now dead. In fact, the bears decided to eat cute little Goldilocks for dinner. What a mess we are in thanks to all the easy money loans made to people with no assets, no brains, and way too much greed.
