Who's in Charge?

This letter was published in yesterday's Los Alamos Monitor.

New information brochure out

Dear Editor,

"Who's in Charge?" has been updated and is available without charge to the public. This informative brochure, published biannually by the Los Alamos League of Women Voters, contains contact information for federal, state and local elected officials as well as for Los Alamos County services and schools.

It is a handy reference tool for Los Alamos residents wanting quick access to official telephone numbers, e-mail and postal addresses. I encourage you to pick up a copy at the following locations: Mesa Public Library, the White Rock Library Branch, the KanDu Center, Betty Ehart Senior Center, the White Rock Senior Center, the Chamber of Commerce, Farmer's Market and CB Fox.

The brochure can also be downloaded from the League's website, www.lwvlosalamos.org/voter.html. The League extends its thanks to CB Fox and Los Alamos Technical Associates for their generous support of the "Who's In Charge?" publication.

  1. Chris Chandler--a longtime Lab attorney, known for her doggedness, stubborness and just plain ruthlessness when it comes to covering up problems at the Lab and orchastrating campaigns (legal or otherwise) of denial and harassment of employees who dare bring up issues of consequence. This is the person who wants us to know who' in charge? Is this a sick joke or what?

  2. Indeed. Christine Chandler did it to me. My career never recovered. I don't know why I am still here.

Maybe because of the good salary and generous benefits? I'll take a wild guess but perhaps that's a large part of the reason that most of the staff has decided to stayed put at LANL regardless of the poor morale. Heck, the median family income in Los Alamos County is reported to be about $95 K and not all of that income is generated by high salaried Phd's.

  4. Speaking of PhDs, does anyone know how many there are at LANL now? I suspect there is now a large number of TSMs whose highest degree is a BS or MS.

  5. 7:49 AM, the last set of figures I saw on new hires was about 2 years ago and indicated that in the TSM category, the percentage of PhD's hired was very low. We hire mostly BS and MS candidates these days. Many of the degrees and resumes of the new hires are not overly impressive and the trend is towards hiring more and more TSMs from B-grade universities. There are a few high quality candidates brought in, but very few. LANL's TSM workforce has declined in quality over the last few years. Many of the best TSMs have left for greener pastures. All of this should surprise no one.

  6. My observation/opinion is much of the work being done these days does not require a PhD. Nothing wrong with that since I assume a good match between background and work is desirable. In fact a PhD is likely a waste in many cases. I'm seeing PhDs (and others) do work that does not take advantage of their background and skills, which is a waste of both time and money of course, but that's life.

My pay is below median, the benefits are now sub-par and I'm not a PhD. I'm unable to sell an original condition 30 year old home.

    Christine Chandler, where are you?
