We Apologize for the Inconvenience

It seems our readers could not access the blog from lanl.gov addresses today. We're not sure of the reason yet, perhaps some network problems at the lab. As soon as we have more information we'll pass that along to you.

  1. It's LANS' new blog filter. LANL, The Rest of the Story is now off-limits to LANL employees.

  2. Pinky knows too much. He must be stopped!

  3. llnl.gov will be next to enjoy the filter.

  4. I thought they were supposed to be working and not reading blogs on company time?

  5. 5:45 PM is correct. Because of LANL's strong work ethic, 9900 out of 10000 have no idea this is going on! And of those 100 who read the blog at work, most do so in their lunch hour.

I think it is really a LANS attempt at brain control, not to curb abuse.

    Is this really happening?

  6. I had no problem accessing the blog today ...

  7. "Is this really happening?"

Yes, it is really happening. I did not see a single hit on the blog from the lanl.gov domain after about 11:30am this morning. Unless there was a network outage at LANL today, LANS is now including lanl-the-rest-of-the-story.blogspot.com with the rest internet content that they filter.

Enjoy your new corporate work environment!

  9. LANL announced today some new filtering implementations which they said would be used to block advertising popups. Perhaps they decided to also begin blocking blogs. I wouldn't be suprised.

The cyber-security team has been given blank check authority by LANS to begin making it almost impossible to effectively use a PC at LANL.

  10. Don't know what you're talking about re: being blocked.

I'm posting this from my office computer at LANL.

It must've just been some kind of temporary outage. Or maybe only certain subnets are being blocked. Anyway, I've noticed nothing unusual myself.

  11. You might think you're posting from lanl.gov, 8:27, but you're not. No hosts from lanl.gov have connected to this blog in the past 36 hours.

  12. Gussie is leaving under the presumption that LANL employees don't care that LANL is blocking the blog. I think that presumption is false. I care. I think it is a shame that LANL employees cannot be trusted.

I also think it is pointless to complain about it. To complain about that is tantamount to complaining about the rule against drinking on the job. The rule restricts individual freedom, but it is based on sound management principles. I'd rather save my breath and complain about unsound management principles.

I hope you keep this blog alive, Pinky. We can enjoy your blog and benefit from it in the evenings. You do a service to the community.

  13. And besides, it's not true that LANL is blocking the blog.

I'm posting this from the LANL yellow net.

  14. Suddenly, at around 10:30am MST lanl.gov started showing up again on the blog's sitemeter logs. This, after a day and 1/2 of not lanl.gov entries.

  15. So what's going on? Is there some address translation or renaming so lanl.gov not seen?

  16. I doubt that LANS would block employees' access to the blog unless it were becoming a significant enough issue to raise questions with auditors about misuse of government property. After all, how many employees don't have access from home? So, it's not like LANS' action would keep employees from the blog content.

On the other hand, it is pretty obvious that some employees spend all day "surfing the web," so one has to wonder whether this is just the beginning of attempts to filter all "non-work-related" web sites. Sort of like what the LANL library did when it restricted electronic access to previously published reports to .gov and .mil requesters, but in reverse.

So how about it, Pinky? Prior to a couple of days ago, what fraction of the blog's hits and posts were from the lanl.gov domain? Apparently, any negative consequences of revealing such data have already occurred.

  17. Until the cause of this apparent non-issue is determined, and until the blog is really, really blocked, such statistics cannot help.

That's right you robo sheeple. How dare you visit any web site that isn't sponsored or otherwise preapproved by Lab leadership for viewing by all you team players out there. Now cover your ears, close your eyes and zip your lip!

  19. You keep sucking that gov't tit 4:54pm, when you open your eyes you might notice that its not a female your sucking on or a tit.

  20. What don't you people get - the blog has not been blocked! There are problems since they installed this pop-up filter. I can't get credit for on-line training and I could not access a journal's page today, but the blog I could. Good grief, it is a hoax! A HOAX!

  21. 4:54 pm: Let's see - you don't own the computer, you don't own the office in which it is located, you don't own the internet connection, you don't even own the time you are using to "visit any web site that isn't sponsored or otherwise preapproved by Lab leadership." That time has been paid for by your employer.

So tell me again why you shouldn't be fired for "surfing the web" at work?

  22. This was no hoax. I noticed that the blog had no traffic from lanl.gov and emailed Gus about it before lunch yesterday. We both monitored the stats all afternoon before I composed this post.

Whatever happened it seems to have ended now. I don't see a problem with keeping a browser tab opened for the blog while at work. Like everyone else, I'm just glad it's not an issue.

Finally, our stats are public and have been since the blog started. Click the stat counters on the left side of the main page, near the bottom. Look who is reading sometime. You might be surprised.
