LANL, state launches new Web site

Frank,
This just made the KOB news this morning. They are having a ribbon cutting at 10AM this morning. I guess that they did not want advance notice to avoid too many people showing up.

Thanks Anonymous. Has anyone tried to use the RACER website yet? I'm not quite ready to call it worthless, but I put a few hours into trying it and I can safely say the public has no more information about contamination from LANL than it did yesterday. I wonder what this cost...

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) - Los Alamos National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, the New Mexico Environment Department and the New Mexico Community Foundation have launched a new Web site.

The site allows users to view environmental data from the northern New Mexico lab online from any personal computer.

Environment Secretary Ron Curry says with the data, New Mexicans can be better informed about impacts from the lab on the environment.

Curry said the lab was directed to provide funding for the Web site project after it failed to disclose in a timely manner chromium contamination in the regional aquifer in 2004.

The online data system is called RACER, for Risk Analysis, Communication, Evaluation and Reduction. It provides lab information from before, during and since the Cold War.

  1. Nothing on the website?
Well, they've certainly been successful with the Reduction of Risk Analysis, Communication and Evaluation, I'd say.

  2. Perhaps an example would help make that case.

  3. Why is LANL's top lawyer, Porter, leaving?

  5. Yes, it is crap.
    There really is no content.

  6. Frank, I think 4:38 was being sarcastic and suggesting that the site reduced communication rather than communicating the risk reduction that should have taken place.

  7. I think you are right. It's so obvious I needed someone to point it out to me. Doh!

  8. This new RACER web site is all flash and no substance. I don't get it.

  9. It looks like Obama may win an we'll soon have a liberal super-majority in Congress. Any views from LANL folks, both good and bad, on how this might changes things for the New Mexico national labs?

Will Tom Udall be able to step into Domenici's big shoes? Will Gov. Richardson stand by and let the lab's be downsized without protest? What part will Jeff Bingamin play, if any, in helping LANL and SNL? And where, exactly, will a President Obama stand when it comes to supporting America's nuclear weapon labs?

Rep. Barney Frank calls for 25% cut in military spending...

Frank envisions post-election stimulus from Democrats - Standard Times, Oct 24

NEW BEDFORD — After the November election, Democrats will push for a second economic stimulus package that includes money for the states' stalled infrastructure projects, along with help paying for healthcare expenses, food stamps and extended unemployment benefits, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank said Thursday.

In a meeting with the editorial board of The Standard-Times, Rep. Frank, D-Mass., also called for a 25 percent cut in military spending, saying the Pentagon has to start choosing from its many weapons programs, and that upper-income taxpayers are going to see an increase in what they are asked to pay.

John Kerry wants New Deal II - Boston Herald, Oct 25

The nation’s battered economy needs an old-fashioned “Rooseveltian lift” of regulatory reforms and government spending on the infrastructure, clean energy and other sectors, U.S. Sen. John Kerry said yesterday.

Kerry said the nation needs to spend more in areas that will both help the economy in the short run and long run - such as on roads and bridges, clean energy initiatives and life sciences.

Looks like money is coming for roads, welfare checks, and "clean" Mother-Earth love'in energy. That about sums it up. And those extended unemployment checks may come in very handy at LANL.

  11. Under Obama, America will become a socialist meca where our military will not be able to defend us. Most of our jobs will disappear overseas because taxes will be so high, and the labs will be greatly diminished in ability. Udall will be of no help for LANL because he will seek to gut the weapons program. Our only salvation will be that Barak will legalize drugs.

  12. On the bright side, we won't have to listen so much bitching and moaning about Pit Manufacturing becoming the LANL mission.

The Laboratory used the Senator until the bitter end. Abuse of power, over the top management salaries, budget over-runs, friends and family plan and he was faithful in getting additional funding even despite everything. He was WRONG in not holding this laboratory accountable. These examples should remind the taxpayer of the same kind of abuses exposed of AIG!!!

It seems this is already happening at breakneck pace over the previous 8 years, which were Republican controlled. Summary: both sides of the aisle are screwing you. The sooner everyone votes for third party candidates, the sooner we can abandon the broken 2-party system.

Wrong! The Congress has been Democratic controlled for the past two years, and Bush has vetoed virtually nothing, because the Congress has done virtually nothing!!! Remember the Reid/Pelosi "first 100 days" pledge? Nothing happened, and it wasn't because of Bush. Prepare for more of the same.

What is so bad socialism? I do not mean to be a jerk but the standard of living, culture, and education of Western Europe is way better than the United States. It is time to get with the program.

  18. 1:10. Pointing out facts does not make you a jerk. Far from it. Unfortunately, too many people in this country seem to be proud of their ignorance.

That is bullshit! The only thing
wrong with the US educational system
is that the parents don't care and far too many fools have bought into the NEA nonsense that throwing money at education will produce well-educated children without the participation of the parents.

Try getting of Los Almaos county some time. There is a whole world out there, things, places, people. Things that you never seen or done. I know you think you know everything and are the center of the world, ... your not. It will be good for you.

  22. 9:40 pm: Your message, with which I completely agree, is unfortunately blunted by your very poor communication skills: "try getting of" when you mean "try getting out of", "things that you never seen" when you mean "things that you've never seen", "your not" when you mean "you're not". Yeah, I'm the grammar (and spelling) police. Grammar matters. You cannot be taken seriously if you haven't taken yourself seriously enough to get an education. It's a simple thing to correct, if you are willing to make an investment in yourself. Please do it. Since I don't know your race, this cannot be a recist comment.

Obviously, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. So it is with education, as well. Example: "your" versus "you're".
