They forgot to mention that post traumatic syndrome is also caused by abusive and sadistic Associate Laboratory Directors such as Brett Knapp who has fired over 100 W-Division and WT-Division employees and contractors during the past three years. Yeah, Fired! I was directed to leave W-Division and had to find other employment on my own. LANS is covering up the fact that Laboratory policy and the employment rights of these employees were violated. LANS Management acted maliciously, recklessly, and abusively to its employees during the period and caused many of these employees to leave the Laboratory and they continue to abuse the employees who still have not left following the forced removal from their positions in the weapon program. Now LANS Management wants our feedback on their behavior. What a bunch of bullshit! Tell LANS Management to read the LANL Blog if they want feedback, its honest, open, anonymous, and more cost effective than paying an external firm thousands of dollars to compile the results which will be tossed.
They also forgot that PTSD was caused by all the brutal treatments from the Nanos era thru today where people were put on investigatory leave for malicious reasons, not allowed to have any contact with Lab personnel, and were treated like death-row criminals left to rot in their own homes.
Yes, DOE cares. After all, Dr. Chu recently re-appointed Tom D'Agostino as head of NNSA so that the lowering of lab morale via D'Ag's Complex Transformation project could continue unabated.
"Actually, all the LANL trouble makers should off themselves and do the rest of us loyal LANL-ites a favor. Perhaps then, we won't have to take more training, fill out more paperwork, send in more computers for full incription, etc." (8:25 pm)
So, 8:25, you are hoping that those who you deem to be "trouble makers" will go kill themselves? And that will somehow make everything better at LANL for you? You are one very sick, f*cked-up puppy, 8:25 pm.
Just when you think you've seen it all at LANL, sickos like 8:25 take things to a brand new low. Doug and Frank, you need to be more careful about letting sickos like this one through the moderating process.
Frank and I would greatly appreciate it if you all made up your minds. If we suppress some of the garbage, you [the collective "you"] complain. We let it through, ditto.
Get it together, please.
On the other hand, we do recognize that the blog is a place to whine...
Everyone who reads the comments knows I'm quite busy lately building a house. Yes I have contractors doing the work, but I have to be there every day.
I still see every comment no matter how late I have to stay up. I know what gets rejected. I've supported every decision Doug has made in my absence and thanked him for doing it. If he keeps helping me I may have to double his pay!
Yes, there is obviously a sicko out there somewhere but I'm not losing any sleep about it. There are a lot of good people and not many sickos. Guess which team I'm on.
Does this DOE poster mean we will soon be required to start taking a manadatory online PTSD training course? Will they be teaching us useful subjects like how to identify employees who are about to go postal?
Since the focus of the poster is on reducing or treating post-traumatic stress, it is obvious that DOE feels no responsibility for having created the trauma in the first place. How about a poster about how to manage without generating trauma?

Interesting point 8:35. I am actually surprised that LANS management hasn't started using the piss-mobiles to screen for those workers on anti-depressants and used this as a way to reduce the workforce.
ie, if you are on antidepressants this is a mind/mood-altering medication and you should be fired.

LANS can't spend a dime on HRP that DOE doesn't mandate be spent, and only on the drugs (and behaviors) DOE directs. Doesn't mean LANS management wouldn't like to do it, or that DOE won't pick up on your suggestion, but if the use of antidepressants were a disqualifying factor for a clearance, LANL would be a ghost town. The first to go would be LANL upper management. How do you think they sleep at night?
"ie, if you are on antidepressants this is a mind/mood-altering medication and you should be fired."
You mean it's possible to work at today's LANL without the aid of mood altering medications? I don't think that's advisable. The risks of going crazy are just too great!
I bet the people who work in legal are giving very high marks to LANL. Yesterday while there for a meeting, I ran into someone who was in a group I trained with last summer. Every day, for 2 - 3 hours a day during lunchtime. At the time, I didn't know which group she was in. But there she was, heading out for a run at 11:00 am. I slogged through this meeting for over two hours, and lo and behold, as I'm leaving, she's returning. I asked her if she works there, and she said yeah, she's a patent lawyer. I asked how she can take so much time off to train during the day and she shrugs and says "they don't care." I tell you, that really fries my beans, knowing how much those guys make. Must be nice.
The lawyers at LANL don't have to bring in any funding to pay for their high salaries. They live off the funding brought in by others, so what do they care?
If you check around LANL, you'll typically find that the most over worked and stressed out employees are the TSMs who are desperately trying to fund their positions to the tune of around $500 K per year in FTE costs. These people have no general charge codes to hit on for their time. It's becoming an almost impossible tasks for them to keep their funding going at these extreme cost levels and they know it. They'll also likely be the first employees LANS gleefully throw out the door if layoffs ever hit. It's a sick situation.
9/29 9:37 pm: "the most over worked and stressed out employees are the TSMs who are desperately trying to fund their positions..."
That has been true at LANL since the 1970's at least. If you aren't in a long-term, highly funded program, you are simply an "entrepreneur" and accept the responsibilities and risks of such status. Presumably you knew this when you signed on. And yes, if your funding goes away you will be RIFed, just like always.

ReplyDeleteOoo! Can we get on disability?
ReplyDeleteTo clarify, I intended no sarcasm when I posted this. I am concerned for my friends at LANL.

Actually the EAP guy, Tom Locke, is making the rounds with a talk on stress management. Our group attended a mandatory one in the last month or two.
