DOE: A Decade of Discovery

Frank,
"The Department of Energy released a commemorative book titled A Decade of Discovery, which highlights a decade of quality research and innovation at the national laboratories."

Unfortunately, [reason inserted by the reader], LANL's contributions do not seem to be stellar (at least as measured by DOE). Contributions by LANL I could detect are:
Fuel cells, Roadrunner, Disease Outbreaks (EpiSims variants - the original team already left to VT), and CINT.

LANL is in a serious decline. What did you expect?

The book is probably as thick as the "HISTORY OF FRENCH WAR VICORIES."

Please see the attached memo signed by Dr. Tegnelia from today's Executive Council Meeting. Changes become effective Monday, 12 January 2009. Dr. Pete Nanos will be the Associate Director, Operations Enterprise. Combating WMD will function as a directorate under this enterprise.

So, what were you expecting to see? You're living in the distant past.

We are waiting for takeoff, i.e. for the Congress to become non-political correct, e.g. return to history:

RRW, RNEP, PLYWD, BIOS, Mini Nuke, new delivery systems, underground testing, Directed Energy Weapons, Missile Defense, and Space Defense.

Will anything of this happen during the first and hopefully only term of President Barack Obama, January 20, 2009 - January 20, 2013, 99.99% not, it will be appeasement (2009), appeasement (2010), appeasement (2011), appeasement (2012), should it happen?: Yes (2009), Yes (2010), Yes (2011), Yes (2012).

And further, if you read one of the think tanks for the Democratic Party, Center for American Progress, CAP, (www.americanprogress.org), I get the overall impression that they are against all weapons (and use), and especially US nuclear weapons, and if you also read www.armscontrolwonk.com, also related to CAP, they have a negative, theoretical and naive obsession with nuclear weapons, and doesn´t understand their stabilizing role in the world, they (Armscontrolwonk.com) are at large: Teenagers, as well as the President-elect Obama, that to me appear like a 12-15 year old schoolboy, that do not understand evil, and further, the pure evil in the world, with the consequence to put US under future terrorist attacks again, and the West in general, and also breake the axis of good, US-UK-Israel.

(PS. Sorry for being off topic, e.g. on target for a strong US national security.)

Let's hope that Pete Nanos stays as an Associate Director at DTRA and not LANL!

Watch out for that Pete Nanos guy. As soon as he moves one step higher up the management chain, you can expect him to start getting abusive and muttering words like "buttheads" and "cowboys" at the people who work on his staff.

I'm with you 10:13 PM. I'm sure going to miss being able to sit around the VP house on weekends watching those great DVD's of the latest Gitmo torture porn. Man, that was great stuff!

Stephen M. Younger ("formerly led nuclear research and development at Los Alamos National Laboratory")

has an article in the WSJ today stating that:

"Perhaps the most prudent course would be to show good faith by reducing existing nuclear stockpiles while developing rigorous verification technologies that would provide assurance against cheaters."

Do we implement this plan before or after Iran gets its nuke up and running?

Why cheat-just buy some from Iran or Pakistan. :)

Gee. I suppose you would like Bush and his republican controlled congress back. Would that make you feel better? After all, they are the ones responsible for the decline of LANL and the rest of the weapons labs. Like you, they really understand evil and how to deal with it.

Could you please publish the attachment mentioned by 1/9, 3:20? Thanks...

I didn't receive the attachment, just the comment. If anyone has the memo about Nanos please email it to me.

I was surprised to see the anti-nuke tone of Younger's article.

Even more suprised that he was disingenuously referred to as the former head of LANL's weapons program, while omitting the fact that he's the current director of the NTS.

I wonder if Steve Younger also gets a corporate paid luxury sports car which he can park out front of NTS in a primo Director's spot?

To counter the hand-wringing about LANL's coverage in the new DOE book, please keep in mind that:

- Political merit, not technical merit, was most assuredly the main criterion for inclusion.

- DOE has 17 labs in 14 states, most of which have a significantly larger Congressional delegation than New Mexico.

- There are only 37 topics covered in the book. 37/17 = 2.2.

Please don't lose any more sleep over this one, it's bad for your health.

How come no one has asked LANL's Director Mike Anastasio to write an article for the prestigious Wall Street Journal?

Nevermind, I think we all know the answer to that one.

Mike rarely talks to his very own employees, much less to someone like the WSJ! I've never seen a LANL Director who is so hidden from his workforce. Just what does this guy do with his time at LANL?

What time at LANL??
