SUBJECT: 2008 Fellows’ Prize Recipients

Each year, Laboratory employees have the opportunity to nominate staff members for Fellows’ Prizes in Research and Leadership. A committee of Laboratory Fellows reviews the nominations and recommends their selection to me. I am pleased to announce the 2008 Fellows Prize Recipients.

FELLOWS PRIZE FOR RESEARCH

The Fellows Prize for Research recognizes high-quality investigations in science or engineering by Laboratory technical staff members and encourages publication in appropriate journals, books, or reports. The research must have been performed at the Laboratory and published within the last 10 years and have had a significant effect on its discipline or program. This year’s Fellows Prize for Research recipients are:

Jaqueline L. Kiplinger, for her remarkable accomplishments in organometallic actinide chemistry research.

Amit Misra, for his longstanding research contributions to the understanding of deformation in materials, and particularly for his recent accomplishments in nanomechanics.

FELLOWS PRIZE FOR LEADERSHIP

The Fellows Prize for Leadership recognizes the value of leadership in science and engineering at the Laboratory. The prize also is designed to stimulate the interest of talented young staff members in developing the skills and making the personal sacrifices necessary to become effective leaders. This year’s Fellows Prize for Leadership recipient is:

Andrew Shreve, for his stimulation of young Laboratory staff to develop skills and to make personal sacrifices necessary to become effective leaders.

Congratulations to each of our Fellows’ Prize recipients. These individuals embody the excellence in scientific research and leadership essential to the Laboratory’s success; their contributions are essential to accomplishing our mission.

I will host an awards ceremony in their honor in the near future.

Is that you Jamie?

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to all the winners! Nice to be reminded that science still goes on at LANL.

Anonymous said...

The Fellows are usually reliable in selecting excellence without political interference.

Anonymous said...

A clean sweep by MPA Division. That's got to chap some hides.

Anonymous said...

Very good selection this year. All great scientists. Who is Doc Aq?

Anonymous said...

If you don't know, then its not even worth to bring it up. Obviously somebody haws sour grapes and a bone to pick by posting this memo with the title "DOC Aq Wins 2008 Fellows Prize."

Anonymous said...

Who is Jamie?

Anonymous said...

As any outsider, Jamie would not seem to be of significance. But what does MPA stand for, and what does that particular division do?

What does DOC Aq stand for, and what is the significance of that?

Anonymous said...

Materials Physics and Applications. This is the superconductivity, nanotechnology (CINT) and magnet lab crew.

Anonymous said...

8:36 - ask Terry Wallace - as the story goes which was well publicized by the Lab, he fired a distinguished director's postdoc (Jaime) after she ended up in a hospital and almost died because her advisor (aka Doc Aq) forced her to clean glassware with caustic aqua regia in a lab without ventillation. Jaime sued and won the case. Nothing ever happened to the advisor. just another reason wallace should never have been promoted to PADSTE.

Anonymous said...

9:34 AM - so how does an actinide chemist - also MPA - fit into all that?

Anonymous said...

10:03, go scuttle back under your rock. The only people who still believe that version of events are Jamie Tournear and her slimebag husband.

Thank you, Mr. Wallace. We'll all take your opinion of the events into careful consideration.

That is the ultimate job security.

Anonymous 10/12/08 12:20 PM - said TSM was no longer welcome in C-division after the AR scandal.

Anonymous said...

Well, actually 6:59 PM, all the good chemists lef C-division one they knew that Neu was going to be ADCLES. Just check out the best and the brightest in MPA-MC. Neu has been trying to get them back into C-div for ages, especially now that the best chemist in C-div, Tom Baker left because he was sick of her lies, unfunded mandates and unfullfilled promises. THis is why we in C are now trying to replace Baker and intrview Asst Profs from Academia who could not get tenure OR people from DuPont who are unhappy. Why not just look in MPA-MC??

Yahoo News Story:

Russia conducts ballistic missile tests by Christopher Boian
Sun Oct 12, 10:42 AM ET

Russia test-fired three long-range missiles on Sunday and pronounced its nuclear deterrent strong in a show of force that experts said had not been seen since the days of the Cold War.

Two of the missiles were fired from nuclear submarines in the Asian and European extremes of the sprawling country while a third was watched by President Dmitry Medvedev on land in northwest Russia, news agencies reported.

It was the second Russian intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test in as many days and the latest in a series of high-profile military exercises of conventional land, sea and air forces as well as strategic nuclear units.

"This shows that our deterrent is in order," Medvedev was quoted by RIA Novosti news agency as saying after Sunday's missile launches.

"We will of course be introducing new types of forces and means into the military," he added, without elaborating.

Independent military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer said the exercises reflected Russia's determination to prepare for major military conflict.

"This was a dry run for a war with the United States," Felgenhauer said of the missile launches, part of major military manoeuvres billed "Stability 2008" involving all military branches.

"These are the biggest strategic war games in more than 20 years. They are on a parallel with those held in the first half of the 1980s. Nothing of the sort has been seen either in Russia or the United States since then," he said.

Russian navy spokesman Igor Dygalo confirmed the near-simultaneous ICBM test-launches from submarines in the Sea of Okhotsk north of Japan and the Barents Sea northeast of Norway, saying they had been planned well in advance.

Speaking to AFP from northwest Russia, Dygalo admitted it was unusual for the navy to conduct three ICBM test launches in two days -- a submarine in the Barents Sea also fired a missile Saturday -- and called the tests successful.

"The missiles hit right on target," he said. News agencies said the missiles launched from the Barents Sea and the secret base at Plesetsk hit targets on the Kamchatka peninsula thousands of kilometres (miles) to the east.

The missile fired from the Sea of Okhotsk hit on target near Kanin Nos, a finger of land jutting into the White Sea in extreme northwest Russia, the reports said.

The Sineva missile launched Saturday -- an exercise also watched by Medvedev from aboard an aircraft carrier -- travelled more than 11,500 kilometres (7,145 miles) in what the Russian president claimed was an all-time distance record.

The missile tests came a day after Russia announced that a small naval flotilla led by the nuclear battlecruiser Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) had paid a call at the Libyan port of Tripoli.

The ships, including a submarine destroyer and support vessels, were to conduct exercises at unspecified locations in the Mediterrannean Sea before heading toward Venezuela for joint exercises there in November, officials said.

Two Russian Tupolev-162 strategic bombers -- each capable of carrying 12 cruise missiles armed with single 200-megaton nuclear warheads -- carried out exercises in Venezuela last month.

Last week, Japan scrambled a pair of US-made F-15 fighters to intercept and escort Russian bombers on patrol near, but not inside, Japanese territorial waters.

The Kremlin, alarmed and angered over new US missile defence plans in eastern Europe and the expansion of the US-led NATO alliance into countries once allied with Moscow, has stressed for a year that it will respond in kind.

Washington has shrugged off Russian moves over the past 18 months to resume strategic bomber patrols around the world and reactivate use of its navy to project power on the seas, questioning if the hardware was up to the task.

Off-topic or what??

MPA does more than nanotechnology and superconductivity. They also have a strong materials science group-hence the actinide chemist.

Sorry, I'm not Terry but do agree with 12:44. The Type B investigation proved contradictory to 10:03 am's comments.

Anonymous said...

I meant to say, MPA has a strong materials synthesis group where a synthetic actinide chemist would would fit in to this picture.

Anonymous said...

who? huh? how cum only TSMs win awards?

Prove it...

Anonymous said...

10/12/08 8:25 PM - yeah but MPA-10 is not materials synthesis. hence the original question. something just doesn't add up. please explain.

Anonymous said...

Prove what? that I'm not Terry or do you want me to produce the type B investigation report? I've read the report but I'm sorry, don't have a copy on my home computer.

Anonymous said...

Prove it... says 10:18

Read the report, you imbicile. If you can read. It's easily accessible on the web.
1. The PDs were provided an alternate location for using AR to clean the frits. A meeting discussing this change was documented in writing.
2. AR is not caustic. That you don't know this is a good indication that you don't know the first thing about this incident.
3. The PD lied about being forced to use AR in an unventilated location. This was why she got fired.
4. Jaime did not win the lawsuit. The case was settled out of court, because it was cheaper to just pay her off than pursue the case further. (The ethics of lab lawyers has been recently discussed on this blog.)

And no, I'm not Terry (or Jackie.)

Anonymous said...

"4. Jaime did not win the lawsuit. The case was settled out of court, because it was cheaper to just pay her off than pursue the case further." (11:26 AM)

And, yet, Todd Kauppila's wife, Sara, can't get LANL to settle for the hottible wrongs done by LANL over three years ago .

Look, 11:26 AM, the lab never settles easily. Perhaps you are the only one at LANL that doesn't know this fact. If LANL settled quickly in this case, it's apparent they must have decided they had a pretty weak case.

And the report you site is a LANL report. Do you really believe what a biased entity has to say in this matter? You are more foolish than you can possible imagine, my friend.

Anonymous said...

Type B investigations are supposed to unbiased you nit wit. If you look at Type B report on the web, it lists all the Board members, none of which are LANL affiliated.

Anonymous said...

4:06 PM, yes, Type-B investigations are "supposed" to be unbiased, but this one ignored the personal mistakes and just tried to blame the institution about lapses in training. Like that would have fixed the problem with two lying postdocs. Oh but of course, more training is the answer to all problems. Silly me.

from a MSDS for AR:

"Synonyms: nitrohydrochloric acid (a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and concentrated nitric acid.)

...

Toxicology

Highly toxic. Extremely corrosive. May be fatal if swallowed or inhaled. Causes severe burns in contact with skin. Causes severe eye damage on contact. Serious respiratory irritant."

In other words, caustic.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and learn to use a spell-checker, because it makes you sound like an IMBECILE when you call someone stupid and you can't even spell the word.

Anonymous said...

4:06 and 6:06 PM - you ain't seen nothing until you seen the internal case review board investigation report.

Anonymous said...

Type B investigations are run by DOE, not the Lab.

Anonymous said...

"yeah but MPA-10 is not materials synthesis. hence the original question. something just doesn't add up. please explain."

MPA-10 actually has more actinide science than MPA-MC, and Kiplinger collaborates with some of the condensed matter physics guys. It's an unusual match, but not inexplicable.

Anonymous said...

11:15 PM, yes AR is caustic and dangerous if you are STUPID enough to not use it in a ventillation hood. With a ventillation hood AR only becomes a moderate hazard, without a hood it is a high hazard. If you have a PhD and can read an IWD you will have no problems.

Anonymous said...

10/13/08 11:26 AM, commented "The PDs were provided an alternate location for using AR to clean the frits. A meeting discussing this change was documented in writing."

Say, 10/13/08 11:26 AM, what happened to the other postdocs? Did these individuals suffer from near fatal injuries like Jaime? Did these postdocs go away and have New Years babies on the Lab's dime like Jaime Tournear?

Anonymous said...

Actually, the other postdoc went on to win a named postdoctoral fellowship. No doubt the best and the brightest at LANL.

Anonymous said...

Near fatal injuries? Rumor has it that Tournear was spotted not too long afterward doing her weekly workout by running several miles. If she was on her death bed and supposedly sustained lung damage, how could this be possible so soon after exposure?

Anonymous said...

6:45 AM, same way she could be seen skiing the ridges at Taos that winter. For a gal that was on her deathbed that Summer, and drawing worker's comp afterwards, a season pass seems like a pretty risky investment to make in the Fall.

Anonymous said...

From what I recall she was hospitalized for 7 days, but I guess she could have been faking that too. Or better yet maybe the hospital staff was in on the conspiracy....

Where's the Fellows Prize for Janitorial Service?

By not offering one, isn't there some racial discrimination going on here?

I wanna sue!

Anonymous said...

Regardless of whether Jamie was "forced" to mix aqua regia on the bench top or not, she has a PhD (!!!) and should know better. Seriously have a little bit of common sense as a chemist! Plus, the hood in that room is a couple feet away from the bench and the hoods were fully functioning that day! (surprise surprise)

As for the last post about "Janitorial Fellowship Prizes"... WHAT??? Unbelievable!! The people that win these prizes have spent years of their lives in school, working tremendously hard and dedicating themselves to novel studies in the name of science. Not to mention, many of the winners of these prizes come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. And you want a prize for what exactly?
Saying, "I WANNA sue" doesn't help your case either!! Wanna is not a word...

Anonymous said...

10/14/08 8:30 PM said, "Actually, the other postdoc went on to win a named postdoctoral fellowship."

If the postdocs indeed were lying, I as how in the hell was this allowed to happen?

Anonymous said...

12:50 PM - Jamie Pool was suffering from bullemia and likely barfed into her lungs. I came here as a postdoc this year from Cornell. Her instability is historic in my former department. It is embarassing to follow such a nutjob to LANL. How convenient that she should "blame" someone for "forcing" her to breathe in a caustic acid. Either Cornell's PhD degrees in chemistry are not worth anything (which Shreve winning a Fellows' Prize would clearly discount if these awards are truly distinguished) or LANL's best and brightest got snookered by a real sick individual who wanted revenge against this Doc Aq. Jaime filed a lawsuit against her advisor at Cornell. See a pattern?

Anonymous said...

"Where's the Fellows Prize for Janitorial Service?
By not offering one, isn't there some racial discrimination going on here?
I wanna sue! - 10/15/08 2:33 PM"

Actually Martin Aguilera took care of that issue by curtailing custodial services. No services - no prize.

Anonymous said...

Jamie talked about her binge/purge habits here at LANL too. I guess she conveniently forgot to mention this to Occ Med. I wonder how different the effects of inhaled stomach acid are from the effects of inhaled aqua regia...LOL. It would certainly explain why her hospitalization occurred 2 months after the supposed "forced" exposure.

Just one question though - why would the Cornell faculty, knowing about her "historic" instability, not only recommend her to Doc Aq as a postdoc candidate, but also support Jamie for a Q clearance? I mean, do these guys have any ethics at all?

Anonymous said...

p.s. Staff Relations is hardly LANL's "best and brightest" and Blame the Supervisor has become a very effective game over the past 5 years at LANL.

Anonymous said...

7:04 PM - it is called a pay off.

Anonymous said...

12:50 PM
Shreve won a prize for leadership, not for science, so, I see no pattern

Anonymous said...

MPA is indeed collecting almost everything, from LDRD to fellow prizes to BES grants to nanocenters. Well done, other divisions should learn from them

Anonymous said...

Somebody was asking about the "Fellow Prize" for janitorial services. Well, it just came in as $65M, see last post from today. No offense to those still believing that science is a major play at LANL (LANS?)

Anonymous said...

Actually 9:07 PM, you should refrain from grouping Doc Aq with the likes of Misra and Shreeve, who have been able to bring in loads of LDRD, BES, and nanocenter funding. Why she was given a Fellows Prize is beyond words ...Let me tell you that C-div was itching to off load Doc Aq who has been living off the tit of others and hasn't brought in lick of funding on her own.

Anonymous said...

To 6:23 - the postdoc committee is one of the last vestages of decency at LANL. They are not corrupt or corruptable. People get fellowships based upon the package that the mentor puts together combined with a person's qualifications. It is that simple. A fellowship is not a payoff, however, the amount of money the Lab paid Jaime Tournear to just go away is criminal.

Anonymous said...

Hey 9:56 PM, don't worry. The TSM wench's days are numbered. Her sugar-daddy's are gone and there are new people in places that will make sure she never gets a dime again.

Anonymous said...

"Hey 9:56 PM, don't worry. The TSM wench's days are numbered. Her sugar-daddy's are gone and there are new people in places that will make sure she never gets a dime again."

You are such a scumbag. Go crawl back under your rock.

Anonymous said...

9:56, leaving aside for a second that your statements about "living off the tit of others" are damn lies...

In science, as in other important aspects of life, it's not always the SIZE of your endowment that matters, it's what you do with it that counts.

Anyway, once you're a Lab Fellow, your opinion on the Prizes will start to count.

Anonymous said...

8:22 has been wishing out loud for Kiplinger's career to crater for at least a year now. Not only hasn't this happened, but she's now won the Fellows Prize, has a stable of postdocs (including Cantat and Graves) of far higher quality than that brainless skank Jamie Tournear, and her external reputation continues to grow with invites for presentations and articles coming in on a regular basis.

If Jackie Kiplinger couldn't be brought down by a pathological liar of a postdoc in cahoots with easily corrupted managers like Kim Thomas in 2005, she certainly isn't going to be brought down by your wishful thinking in 2008.

Goodbye.

Anonymous said...

Touched a nerve because your accusations are totally false. Not to mention, how many MALE scientists suck off the t!ts of others but *that's* acceptable. If its a woman, then we require sugar daddies. Your sexism is showing through.

Anonymous said...

8:28 am "Your sexism is showing through."

By postulating that the sexes are equal??

Anonymous said...

YOu see 9:56 PM, they are not and especially with LANS. I would love to know how many women got shafted this year with the new system that was supposed to bring equality based on peformance. All I have heard is that the women have been screwed royally at the expense of the boys club-friends and family plan. It is worse than ever. Thank you LANS - at least you are pumping money into Espanola.

Anonymous said...

No 9:5 pm, by postulating that women require a sugar daddy yet everyday, male scientists at the lab go unfunded.

Do you have a snide term for these men?

Anonymous said...

10:19 6:17 pm: "Do you have a snide term for these men?"

No. but since I wasn't the original poster of that particular piece of meat, I don't have to. You however, have to account for your really nasty attitude towards anyone from whom you think you might have received a slight, especially those you perceive to be male.

Anonymous said...

To 10/18/08 9:56 PM - Yesterday, Wallace's office released a synopsis of the winners with photos. OMG, the girl winner's accomplishments pale in comparison to the men. She should never have gotten this award - this is how awards at LANL end up being meaningless when girls who should not get them do. Talk about affirmative action but awards style.

Anonymous said...

"OMG, the girl winner's accomplishments pale in comparison to the men."

girl:boy, woman:man. Sheesh. Not even subtle.

Anonymous said...

6:35 am,

What are you, twelve?

"And OMG, the boy winners are SO hot!"

Anonymous said...

Ain't that the truth, 6:35. It's all been downhill since they made Jill Trewhella a Lab Fellow. Next thing you know, we've got dumb chicks like Merri Wood-Schulz and Joyce Guzik being voted in, and before you know it, the entire system is a big joke. And then, to add insult to injury, these girls start voting for their sorority sisters to win Fellows Prizes and complaining to management if the men don't vote the same way. Life was so much better when we had them convinced that "math is hard." It's tough for a guy to even come home from work and find a hot dinner waiting on the table anymore, what with all this affirmative action going on.

Anonymous said...

Gee 6:35, I guess this is even more of an accomplishment that Kiplinger got this award considering math and science are so hard for us girls.

Anonymous said...

6:40 - even Mary Neu is a better chemist than Doc Aq. This award is a complete joke.

Anonymous said...

7:30 PM - please prove your statements.

Anonymous said...

9:38 am - It was obviously a statement of opinion, and therefore not "provable" as fact. Are you aware of any process being used to directly compare the capabilities of any two specific staff members at the Lab? Of course not. Do you challenge every statement made to you in that fashion? Or is it just that all opinions are invalid except your own?

Anonymous said...

All you LANL chemists seem to do is stab each other in the back. How does LANL get any good scientists to come work at their lab? The chemical fumes must have turned your brains to addle.

Anonymous said...

11:55 AM, yes the one thing LANL chemists hate the most is when another is successful and it is really bad if it is a successful woman. And this one in particular is not welcome at LANL as stated in an earlier post, her sugar-daddies have been removed from power and she will never get another dime at LANL.

Anonymous said...

"Are you aware of any process being used to directly compare the capabilities of any two specific staff members at the Lab?"

Well, you could start by asking which one has a Fellows Prize.

Anonymous said...

10/22/08 7:16 PM:

Yawn. See 10/18/08 8:22 AM.

Anonymous said...

"Are you aware of any process being used to directly compare the capabilities of any two specific staff members at the Lab?"

Well, one might ask which one gets invited to more talks both nationally and internationally. So there. Also, which one has more publications?

Anonymous said...

8:22, I would say yawn indeed as Priedhorsky is the new LDRD czar (aka Terry's bitch) AND the mentor of the husband (Derek Tournear) of Doc Aq's terminally injured postdoc (Jaime Pool-Tournear). So sad, but sucks to be Doc Aq, eh?

Anonymous said...

"Are you aware of any process being used to directly compare the capabilities of any two specific staff members at the Lab?"

Well, one might ask which one gets invited to more talks both nationally and internationally. So there. Also, which one has more publications?
10/22/08 8:54 PM

In that case it is Neu.

Anonymous said...

10/22/08 9:53 PM, let me see if I understand this right.

You are stating as a known fact, that Bill Priedhorsky intends to use his position as LDRD Program Director, in conspiracy with Principal AD Terry Wallace, to retaliate against Dr. Jacqueline Kiplinger for providing evidence to the internal LANL investigations that revealed that Jamie Pool-Tournear lied about being forced to inhale aqua regia?

I think Dr. Kiplinger's personal attorney will be quite interested in this information. Thank you for your post.

Anonymous said...

I think 9:53 pm should have attended yesterday's session on employment law.

Anonymous said...

5:35 PM, I believe that Kiplinger can kiss her career at LANL good bye if she doesn't crawl back under her rock and stay quiet.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous threat. How typical.

Anonymous said...

Well I for one hope that LANS' management and Congress is watching this and does something to finally get rid of this individual who is an insitutional embarassment.

Anonymous said...

7:27 PM, you really have me ROTFL now. "This individual" - meaning Kiplinger? The worst untested accusation in this thread is that she is less deserving of a Fellows Prize than Misra, Shreve or Neu. And you really think LANS management, much less Congress, gives a shit? Please get some therapy.

Anonymous said...

Interesting point 10/23/08 7:42 PM. In fact, I wonder what the employment law expert, Phil Kruger, would say about all this?

Anonymous said...

8:51 AM - Quite honestly if this award were meaningful then the Lab would be acknowledging it on the external page and Wallace on the PADSTE page. Sounds like 7:27 PM is onto something regarding the institutional embarassment issue.

Anonymous said...

6:29, since LANS took over they haven't even announced when someone becomes a Fellow. LANS doesn't give a shit about science, nor does Mike, or Terry, etc. Get over yourself.

Anonymous said...

10/26 7:16 pm: "since LANS took over they haven't even announced when someone becomes a Fellow"

You obviously haven't yet come to grips with what it means to work for a for-profit, non-academic company. The term "Fellow" is purely academic, attuned to institutions like the American Physical Society. A title like "Fellow" when attached to a company like LANS, means less than nothing. If I were offered it (not to worry, it'll never happen), I would reject it as meaningless and counterproductive to my career. Really, you need to re-adjust your thinking. You obviously still think you work for UC and that your position carries some academic respect. It doesn't.

Anonymous said...

Well, I can honestly say that this b!tch is almost outta LANL. Wallace was in a meeting where he clearly said he was glad that this "award winner" was almost penniless and postdoc-free. He said it had been way too long to see Doc Aq gone.

Anonymous said...

Well, 8:42 PM, I am a friend of this so-called b!tch and I would just like to say that most people don't want to see her gone just Jim Boncella and MPA-Div and C-Div and ADClES'? Of course, I have encouraged her not even consider leaving before a huge lawsuit and a public release of all the legal fuckups and discrimination and abuse that has been exercised in the process. You decide.

Anonymous said...

Postdoc free? Your sources are hopelessly misinformed. Kiplinger continues to attract and hire great postdocs.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I herd that hear Reines is now in C-Div. Guess he couldn't stand the Agua Regia fumes anymore?

Anonymous said...

Nah, his ego just got too big to fit into MPA Division anymore.
