Fellows Prize winners recognized

[Since this story contains little more than names and a photo, I waited until today to publish it because more information was promised in today's News Bulletin. It seems there are two News Bulletins, one for the public and one for internal use only. Hopefully someone will email me the story that LANL doesn't want the public to see.]

November 14, 2008

Jaqueline Kiplinger, left, of Condensed Matter and Thermal Physics, talks with Monica Misra of Genome Science at the Fellows Prize winners reception Wednesday at the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center.

Kiplinger, Amit Misra and Andrew Shreve both of the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies are the 2008 Laboratory Fellows Prize recipients.

Laboratory employees nominate staff members for the Fellows Prize. A committee of Lab Fellows reviews the nominations and makes recommendations to the director.

Reception Wednesday for 2008 Fellows Prize winners

November 10, 2008

A reception for 2008 Laboratory Fellows Prize recipients Jacqueline Kiplinger, Amit Misra, and Andrew Shreve is at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Jemez and Cochiti rooms of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center.

Kiplinger of Condensed Matter and Thermal Physics (MPA-10) and Misra of the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (MPA-CINT) are receiving the Fellows Prize for Research.

The Fellows Prize for Research in science or engineering recognizes individuals for outstanding research performed at the Laboratory that was published within the last 10 years and that has had significant impact on its discipline or program.

Shreve, also of the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, received the Fellows Prize for Leadership. This Fellows Prize is awarded for outstanding leadership in science or engineering and to recognize the immense value of leadership in science and engineering at the Laboratory.

"Congratulations to each of our Fellows Prize recipients," Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio said in an all-employee memo. "These individuals embody the excellence in scientific research and leadership essential to the Laboratory's success. Their contributions are essential to accomplishing our mission."

Laboratory employees nominate staff members for the Fellows Prize. A committee of Lab Fellows reviews the nominations and makes recommendations to the director.

Interesting that there are two Newsbulletins. The paranoia of LANS management continues to increase.

Anonymous said...

I suspect that LANS management considers the Fellows to be just an annoyance. There was a time (when John Browne was Director) that the
Fellows as well as the SEAC were treated with some dignity. That ended with Admiral Butthead.

It isn't clear the SEAC continues to exist.

Without a doubt the standards have clearly gone down if Doc Aq was "awarded" a Fellow's Prize. There are far more talented and productive actinide chemists at LANL than this chicka.

Anonymous said...

Why doesn't Wallace just fire this wench - Terry are you listening?

Anonymous said...

Obviously, too many Lab Fellows have retired or else they would have realized what Kiplinger has done to the reputationn of the Lab.

Anonymous said...

Actually, the award should have gone to her Reines Fellow postdoc -he is the one responsible for all of her award-winning discoveries.

Anonymous said...

"what Kiplinger has done to the reputationn of the Lab."

What would that be? She seems like a good scientist, has had strong impact in her field, and could get a faculty job. I have never heard anything bad about her outside of the lab, so I am not buying what you have to say. Did the prize come out of thin air?

I thinks those comments were from the faux postdoc going postal. Sound and fury...

It this is true it is getting kind of scary. Maybe it will end up like the Paula Abdul stalker.

11:36 ... " She seems like a good scientist, has had strong impact in her field, and could get a faculty job..."

Puh-lease. WHat impact? It is not like this woman published in Sciencr or Nature. Just second-rate journals.

She could get a faculty job? Where? bum-f*ck-U? You have to have a strong funding base like Victor Klimov, Joe Thomson, Toni Taylor or Sergei Tretiak to be marketable. THe little BES she has would have to stay with the Lab, other than that Doc Aq doesn't have what it takes for any university to want to hire her.

I hope the guards have all been briefed on this nut job and will stop her if she tries to enter lab property. I do not see this ending well.

I just looked her up yes she could get a
faculty job in a chemstry department no problem. I do not know who you are but you have no idea what you are talking about in regards to science or academics. Your comment about Nature and Science is very telling. Most people who get faculty positions in chemistry departments do not have publications in these journals.

Anonymous said...

11:06 is correct. Science and Nature are definitely not the gold standard journals for chemistry.

And attributing all of Kiplinger's success to one Reines Fellow is a slap in the face to all the other outstanding postdocs and students who have worked under her mentorship. (Yes... even the crazy ones.) Kudos to Taw for the Ti-CF3 work, Pool for the pyridine activation, and Graves for the U(V) chemistry.

And kudos to Kiplinger for being the intellectual force behind all of this.

"...what Kiplinger has done to the reputationn of the Lab."

Really? I heard Bruce Bursten wrote a letter for her Fellows Prize nomination. How bad can it be if the ACS President (a AAAS Fellow and prominent actinide chemist) endorses you?

Anonymous said...

Bursten is a long-time collaborator with Kiplinger and her former-PD advisor Burns. Not exactly an arms-length or impartial endorsement.

Such wit. Really adds to the integrity of your argument, too. Nicely done.

"There are far more talented and productive actinide chemists at LANL than this chicka."

What a tired and useless comment. If there are more deserving actinide chemists, then why don't you get off your lazy self-centered ass and nominate them next year?

(Or, if you are referring to yourself in this post, then start cultivating some friends who can nominate you.)

Anonymous said...

"Puh-lease. WHat impact? It is not like this woman published in Sciencr or Nature. Just second-rate journals."

Oh yes, all her many, many publications in the second rate chemistry journal, JACS. ROTFL.

Anonymous said...

"Bursten is a long-time collaborator with Kiplinger and her former-PD advisor Burns. Not exactly an arms-length or impartial endorsement."

Since when are endorsements or letters of recommendation supposed to be impartial??

Anonymous said...

I hope Kiplinger is reading this blog and that this award is a sign that the Lab is doing right after they hung her out for slaughter. I worked in Lab Legal during the time the Tournear case was going on and I can tell you this - Chris Chandler and friends all know Kiplinger has a great case against the Lab. After what I have read on this post and others before about the retaliation and shameful treatment I hope this poor girl is pursing a law suit against LANS.

Trust me he and other HAVE TRIED to get rid of her - the dumbass wench simply won't leave!

Cite one publication with both Bursten and Kiplinger - just one.

Doc Aq = bow wow! and not so smart 11:39 AM.

Anonymous said...

11/18/08 8:28 PM, how mature.

and..

I for one am sick and tired reading about Doc Aq. Clearly, a handful of people have a bone to pick and keep regurgitating the same rhetoric. Get over it and move on to something more productive.

8:55 - praise the Lord. You are so right. e-nuff. Move on. This dog has died. buh-bye!

That is because she cannot sell her house!

Believe me, if UC had not bought Nanos' house we would still have him around.

"That is because she cannot sell her house!"

I think this problem is universal for many scientists at LANL. If the housing market ever improves, you are likely to see a mad rush out the gates of this place.

I don't know -sounds to me like DoC Aq still being at LANL is part of the problem which is why folks keep "regurgitating the same rhetoric". If she is so bad, why is she still at LANL? WHy are GM, Crysler, and Ford still being supported by our govt?

Somethings to think about ...

I am sorry but you get an F in intro to logic, Philosohy 102.

(1) My cat cannot so be bad since she is still in my house.

(2) GM is being supported by the goverment.

(3) Therefore my cat is bad.

I guess if you sniffed enough Aqua Regia this would make perfect sense.

11:28 PM,

Doc Aq is still at LANL because the UAW has the Democratic Party by the short hairs?

WTF???

Anonymous said...

I know Wallace has tried and tried to get rid of her before, during, and after LANS took over. I really don't understand why it is so difficult - can't they just fake a pee test or something?

Anonymous said...

I don't understand something. If this Doc Aq was cleared of wrongdoing why is it a problem that she is still at LANL and why is winning an award a bad thing?

Anonymous said...

based on all the continuing Wallace posts about his pathetic management and unethical behavior, do we *really* give a rats @ss what he thinks about Doc Aq???

Anonymous said...

11/22/08 8:42 AM asked:

No, you dolt - she is clearly being bailed out like the UAW will be otherwise she would not be here and have the ability to perform research.

Why would Wallace want to get rid of her? Now that she has won the prize she is sort of untouchanle.

Cuz she is a girl, stupid.

11/23/08 11:59 AM askd" Why would Wallace want to get rid of her? Now that she has won the prize she is sort of untouchanle."

Hardly and do not forget that Wallace is a vindictive prick - if DOc Aq knows anything about him mismanaging while he was in charge of the DOE Aqua REgia incident investigation and the other internalones, he wants her gone. Remember, he wants Mike's post. He got rid of MyHang Huynh (R&D 100, Macarther Fellow and DOE EO Lawrence Award winner). He will get rid of Doc Aq.

Anonymous said...

If Terry is spending as much energy on Doc Aq as has been suggested by posters on this blog, it would certainly explain why he doesn't seem to have any time leftover to perform his actual job.

And if he's really that bad of a manager, then he's a shoo-in for Lab Director.

God help us.

7:59 PM, Please, My Hang Huynh's awards alone shows that she is far better than Doc Aq. Absolutely no comparison.

My Hang Huynh is one of the best at LANL. What ever happened to her? I thought that LANL would be touting all over her. MacArthur Genuis awards are the best it gets.
