Rumor has it

Rumor has it that $1 billion slated for the NNSA has been removed from the House-Senate compromise version of the economic stimulus bill. Anyone know the details?

POGO is apparently breaking out the champagne over this news:

Breaking News - No Stimulus Funds for NNSA

POGO is delighted to learn that the NW&M Monitor will be reporting in its weekly publication that in reconciling the House and Senate versions of the economic stimulus bill, funds have been removed for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) weapons program. It may have been the result of grassroots pressure, or the participation of congressional staffers with seasoned oversight skills, or the leadership's recognition that $1 billion for the NNSA was not a wise investment. POGO had several reasons for opposing these funds.

As I write this, Congress is presenting its Agreement on Economic Stimulus Legislation, so we haven't seen anything in writing yet. We'll keep you posted as we learn more.

Will the bad news for LANL never end?

The $1 billion was slated for cleanup at the NNSA labs. Without it, LANL won't even be able to eek out a living with a Rocky Flats II scenario.

So POGO is delighted that environmental money was cut? Interesting story.

The entire country is tired and pissed with all of the waste going on at Los Alamos, without Domenici around (by the way he may be indictied for Political crimes againt US Attorney Iglesia) to defend the millions in wastful spending we are in deep dodo. Anyone whos has been around for a while knows whats coming down the Pike, the rest of the folks are living on in fantacy land.

You forgot to put in the standard anti-nuke rhetoric about LANL scientists being war criminals and baby-killers, 9:21 PM. How thoughtless of you!

Oh, come on! The entire country has a few other problems on their mind right now, such as food, housing, and work. And very little of the country knows that LANL exists.

Let's pretend that 100% of LANLs budget is wasted. That is just about 1/5 of the performance payout Merrill Lynch made last year as it was going out of business. LANL has few if any $1400 trash cans. LANL waste is peanuts compared to rest of the meltdown.

What are "political crimes?"

Do we live in a banana republic?

POGO's hidden agenda is the destruction of the country's military industrial complex. Since LANL designs US nuclear weapons, they are a bulls-eye target for POGO's dirty work.

In fact, POGO doesn't want to see clean up at LANL because it would leave them with one less arrow with which to aim at LANL.

Seeing how the "67 lost computers" story was so successfully seeded into the mainstream press in less than 24 hours, it appears POGO is very successful at playing this dirty little game. Why people within LANL or DOE/NNSA help them out with their dirty tactics by passing along internal memos and email is beyond me.

Don't be a doofus, 10:20. The "political crime" was Domenici's use of his Senate office to pressure a US attorney to improperly use the criminal justice system to harass Domenici's protege's political opponents.

So yes, Domenici's behavior was worthy of a "banana republic."

"Hidden agenda"??? What is "hidden" about POGO's agenda? The "Evil Twins" of Danielle Brian (POGO) and Sharyl Atkisson (CBS) are completely open about their desire to shut down the US NW Complex, starting with LANL.
