Bomb Envy

There was an interesting hit on the blog this morning: Executive Office Of The President Usa.

Here's the referring link that brought them to us, a google keyword search on "don cook atomic weapons establishment":

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=don%20cook%20atomic%20weapons%20establishment&start=20&sa=N

The results returned by that search are fairly interesting, with many of the linked articles focused on reports that Britain's Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) at Aldermaston might be designing a new bomb.

"The gates are closed at Aldermaston which seems to be gearing up to develop the next generation of nuclear weapons, despite the recent Blix WMD report that states explicitly we'd all be better off without them."

So, maybe this explains why Chu and Congress seem so willing to fund a new CMRR -- fear of falling behind the Brits in weapons design.

Or maybe this?...

Nuclear engineer from Cern lab arrested for al-Qaeda links (UK Times, 10-09-09)

French agents have arrested a researcher from Europe's top atomic lab on suspicion of links to al-Qaeda, fuelling fears that terrorists could be targeting the nuclear industry.

The 32-year-old man, who was detained along with his brother, works for the prestigious European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern) in Geneva, Switzerland, according to French police sources.

''The inquiry will doubtless say what were the objectives in France or elsewhere and indicate perhaps that we have avoided the worst possible scenario,'' said Brice Hortefeux, the French Interior Minister.

An intelligence source told Le Figaro that ''this is a very high level'' case.

I don't think Obama is worried about falling behind the Brits in nuclear weapon design expertise.

Today it was announced that he won the Nobel Peace prize largely for his work at nuclear disarmament. He'll likely follow this award up by feeling heavily obligated to cut funding at the US weapon labs even deeper.

Maybe America is planning to subcontract out all future nuclear weapon design work to the Brits. I understand that they have a much stronger sense of self-preservation, being a bit closer to Iran and all.

Come on, now. Weapons aren't even on Dr. Chu's radar screen. He's left that task of monitoring to Tom D'Agostino and NNSA's crack group of PR generating minions.

It appears that Chu could care less about what happens to the NNSA research labs. He's too busy funneling large sums of new funding to his DOE energy labs.
